#2: Stop asking for “personal” references and you’ll triple your potential applicants

recruitingbyteslogoPersonal references are a complete waste of time! Is someone’s best friend, parent or uncle really going to tell you something bad about them? Doubt it. So stop asking for “personal” references!

No matter who you interview, always get 2-3 “professional” references. Not their Managers or Supervisors, their peers. People that they’ve actually worked with that can attest to their professional abilities, dependability, etc… If they’re a sales person, get the names and numbers of other sales people they’ve worked with, if they’re a technician; get other technicians, etc…

You not only will gather good information that you can use to determine if this is someone you’d like to hire, but if you don’t hire this applicant, these references are all potential applicants for you in the future.

Add these people to a list and give them a call in 2-3 months to see how their job is going. If they’re not completely happy with where they are, you can start talking to them about working for you. This is a sure fire way to triple or even quadruple the number of qualified applicants without spending an additional dime on employment advertising.
