In the current economic times, you may have people walking in your door on a daily basis looking for work. Or what I like to call “low hanging fruit”. It’s great to have more people to choose from but be careful. Many of these applicants aren’t the “crème of the crop” and can ultimately be poisonous to your company and your reputation.
Nobody really likes recruiting; placing employment ads, sifting through calls-emails-faxes and interviewing. But like they say, “no pain, no gain”. The easy path isn’t necessarily the best thing for your company.
Sure, there are some qualified people out there. But think about the types of people you let go first when business slows. It’s not your superstars.
So, what should you do? Make sure you are hiring your next superstar. Look beyond those people walking in the door; keep an employment ad out there to pull in a broader group of applicants. And evaluate them all, do background checks, drug testing, employment verification and talk to their references.
I know it’s a lot of work, but your company is worth it. And we all know a bad hire will cost you in callbacks and lost customers, not to mention the negative effect it has on your good employees.
